2018’s Most Stylish Women and How to Get the Look

What we consider to be fashionable is objective and we all have different styles that we like and dislike. But in my opinion, fashion is freedom: freedom and flexibility to express your style as you please.

Fashion is also about finding inspiration in looks - how often do you read blogs and magazines and aim to emulate or recreate a celebrity's looks? I often write 'get the look or 'steal her style' features for those who want to curate similar looks.

Check out three of 2018's most iconic women to discover what their fashion says about them and replicate their famous outfits.

Meghan Markle
Meghan Markle was always known as an actress (her most famous role is appearing on Suits) but ever since she started dating Prince Harry, she's become a style icon to me. I actually envy her looks and she wears the most flawless outfits.

Her character on the hit show Suits would often be spotted wearing high heels, bandeau dresses, skirts with high hemlines and blouses with cuts - such as low v-necks and slit detailing. However, as a soon-to-be member of the British Royal Family, Meghan Markle's wardrobe has changed to long, belted coats and simple ankle boots to achieve a casual-chic vibe.

Meghan Markle's dress sense is sophisticated and reserved, reflecting the transition from all-American girl, to Canadian resident, to British fashionista. Before, she would have worn graphic tees and straight leg jeans, but now, she wears tailored blouses and laced midi dresses that evoke a sense of royal-appropriate elegance. However, she still looks good when she dresses down. When she attended the Invictus Games holding hands with Prince Harry, she chose to wear simple jeans with a plain shirt, once again showcasing that casual-chic vibe.

Steal her style
The important thing to remember is that you don’t have to dress prim and proper 24/7 when you’re emulating the Meghan Markle look. Although her style has certainly matured and reined itself in to a degree, there are still bursts of chic provocation. Her braless, gold-embroidered tulle and silk gown that she wore for her engagement portraits is just one example of her ability to infuse formal events with contemporary fashion.

To dress like Meghan Markle doesn't mean dressing prim and proper 24/7 - that's not necessary. Her outfits have matured over the years but there as still chic elements and she is able to wear clothes that infuse formal outfits with the contemporary side of fashion. To emulate her looks and keep your outfits interesting, inject a touch of chic with class. Team shirt-dresses with low heels, off-the-shoulder tops with plain skinny jeans and flats, and low-cut blouses with cigarette trousers and a tailored blazer.

Rihanna's looks have been a huge part of her celebrity status. She has a wonderful ability to pioneer revolutionary, bold and daring styles, and her fashion sense has propelled her to the highest echelons of celebrity fashion, which makes her one of the world's top style icons.

Rihanna's fashion is evolutionary and her looks have transformed since she rose to fame in 2005. Reflecting on her early style, many of her outfits gave the impression of a young, confident, sweet girl: strappy dresses, rara skirts, crop tops and boyfriend jeans. Over time, her style has become a lot more edgy and bold, showcasing her rebellious side and reinforcing her 'good girl gone bad' status. Around this time, her looks would often consist of bralettes paired with hot pants and her famous revealing double denin - skirt-and-jacket - outfit.

Since then, Rihanna has morphed her look again, blending her edgy outfits with nuances of high fashion. Case in point: the famous naked dress of 2014, made of nothing but Swarovski crystals and fishnet fabrics. The design of this iconic gown was overtly high fashion.

In addition to this, Rihanna has brought about her styles in the form of her fashion line, FENTY PUMA, which showcases athleisure designs that combine high-fashion with feminine sportswear.

Steal her style
Throughout her style-icon life, Rihanna has always used bold colours and fabrics. Over the years, we've seen her in everything from feather-embellished bejewelled bikinis to silk emerald tracksuits. To replicate her outfits, you would need to embody her confidence, self-assurance and sense of adventure.

Combine stiletto heels with denim playsuits or tracksuit bottoms, then dress for the evening in something feminine, but outlandish — like the lilac tulle mini dress she wore to Fenty Beauty’s launch party.

Rihanna adores wearing shirts and coats that hang off her shoulders, putting a fresh twist on the cold-shoulder fashion movement, so incorporate strapless tops and bralettes into your look to ooze the same level of seductive sophistication.

Margot Robbie
Australian actress, Margot Robbie, has experienced a rapid rise in fame and success. In just two years, Robbie went from Neighbours cast member to global  Hollywood film star, throwing her talent, character and style into the world’s spotlight. Her role in the 2013 film The Wolf Of Wall Street - which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the main character - brought her international success.

What's interesting about Margot Robbie's look is how, despite her fashionable transformation, it has retained a laid-back vibe synonymous with her home country of Oz. She blends casual-chic daytime attire with Hollywood-ready evening outfits effortlessly, which means emulating her style opens up a world of possibilities.

The plunging, gold slit dress she wore this year to the LA premiere of I, Tonya - compared to the long-sleeve, crew neck frock she donned for The Wolf Of Wall Street premiere in 2015 - highlights a growth in sartorial confidence, and possibly, industry acceptance.

Robbie’s style is feminine, yet eclectic. From sultry lace jumpsuits and conservative high-neck gowns to girly polka dot dresses and sophisticated belted tapered trousers; the essence of Robbie’s style poses the idea that each occasion has a dress code, and it is up to the individual to infuse it with their preferred style.

Steal her style
Let the tone of the event guide your choices if you want to incorporate Margot Robbie’s style. Sneakers, logo tees and denim give off her signature, laid-back, Aussie-girl vibe when the occasion is low-key, while plain playsuits, kimonos, sandals, and asymmetric skirts reign supreme during dressed-up day events.

Margot Robbie is a fan of floral prints (like me!) and floaty silhouettes, so opt for loose-fit dresses, culotte jumpsuits and embellished gowns. In the evening, she tends to stay true to the accepted standards of classy, elegant and glamorous fashion. Ensure you don’t show both legs and arms at the same time and select garments featuring intricate embroidery, classic embellishments or eye-catching metallic finishes.

Channel your inner celebrity diva by incorporating a selection of these stars’ staples fashion pieces into your everyday look.
