The Philosophy Tag

Sunday, January 08, 2017

Anyone who knows me knows that I have a set of personal beliefs and values that I choose to live my life by. These philosophies are purely defined by myself and they pretty much focus on how I want to live my life and take control over my own destiny.

I've decided to complete the philosophy tag in order for those reading my blog to get a little bit of an insight into my thoughts.

Where is your Happy Place?
I don't actually have a so-called "Happy Place" but I love going to national parks and gardens because I stroll in one clears my head and makes me a lot more mindful.

Is it better to be liked or to be respected?
Growing up and during my time at university, I was so desperate for people to like me, but over time I've come to realise that it is much more important to be respected than it is to be liked. Most of all, it is very important to have respect for yourself and it is better to be hated for who you are than it is to be loved for something you are not.

Describe one memory that changed your life?
I don't have a specific memory that changed my life but I've been through a lot and I have had many traumatic moments. These moments ruined my childhood and still affect me in the present.

What’s your greatest fear?
To be honest, my greatest fear is being hurt. I'm kind, loving, loyal, selfless and caring so when I am hurt by someone instead of receiving positivity in return, I feel as though I have been deeply stabbed in the heart and it's not a nice feeling at all.

If you weren’t in media, what would you be doing?
This question is a hard one to answer because I haven't established a long-term career in media. I've written for loads of online magazines and there are so many areas of the media one can enter - e.g. I've worked in marketing, communications, blogging and social media roles. I really can't think of what else I'd be doing but I think I would probably work in a job that is related to my degree, such as social policy (which is something I'm quite passionate about.)

Do comments affect you?
Yes. Sometimes they do. It depends. I'm slowly getting to a point in my life where comments don't bother me too much. Sometimes some people say things and I'm like "Whatever, that's a load of nonsense."

However, I am a human being with a heart (not made of stone) and I am a sensitive soul by nature so nasty, spiteful and vicious comments, digs, remarks, rumours, put-downs, accusations and assumptions are extremely hurtful to me, especially from people who know me and should know to treat me better.

What was the last book that you read?
The last book that I read was a book titled Self-Compassion: I Don't Have To Feel Better Than Other To Feel Good About Myself by Simeon Lindstrom. It really opened my mind up to the concept of self-compassion and it made me realise that I need to be a lot kinder to myself because I am a human being after all.

What do you think about the current state of the media?
To be honest, I hate the fact that certain sections of the media perpetuate negative and toxic messages and unfortunately a lot of people believe what they read/view/see without questioning or challenging any of it. It is always important to analyse the media with a critical eye.

Is it better to have more or less choice?
More choice!

What is a person? Is it the mind or the body?
A person is the mind and the body. A person is a human being with various thoughts, feelings, wants, needs, desires, values, beliefs and experiences.

Is life one continuous journey?
Yes, of course. Life is a learning curve. There are so many mistakes to make and so many lessons to learn from. You don't stop learning once you become an adult.

What happens when you die?
To be honest, I care more about the present than the afterlife.

Do we have free will?
Yes - I believe that all humans have free will but there are two issues:
1. A lot of humans use free will to the detriment of others.
2. Even though we all have free will, society and various circumstances places constraints on us and tries to categorise us, placing limitations on us in the process of socialisation.

However, it takes a special kind of person to exercise their free will, step outside the box and take control of their own destiny.

And those are my thoughts! I tag everyone reading this post to complete the philosophy tag. Once you have done that leave your links below in the comments section.
