Why Do I Wear Makeup?

I felt a little bit inspired to write this post after reading beauty blogger Lucie's post.  It got me thinking and I thought I'd share my opinions too.

Sometimes I wear makeup.  I'll wear makeup because I feel like it, or for special occassions.  I like wearing a bit of makeup but I don't overdo it, and I am not the sort of person who cannot leave the house without makeup (though I'd rather not leave the house without painted nails!)

Usually I paint my nails the night before, and then in the morning before I go out, I cleanse my face and apply face cream.  Then I apply mascara, eyeliner, lip balm and lipstick/lipgloss.

Growing up I didn't wear makeup, despite the fact that I had a makeup set at the age of 11, and despite the fact that I used to experiment a little bit with makeup in early adolescence.  The schools I went to were very strict about makeup so I didn't wear makeup at all.  The sixth form I went to was relaxed about makeup but I still didn't start wearing it until went to university.

Now I absolutely love makeup!  I have loads of it!  I love wearing it and I love shopping for it!  Even if I am not planning on shopping for makeup, I just love to look around beauty halls and stores such as Space NK, Debenhams, House of Fraser, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, The Body Shop, Models Own, Superdrug, Boots and Harrods.  I also love makeup from fashion retailers such as Topshop, Primark, H&M, River Island and New Look, and sometimes I shop for makeup on Fragrance Direct.

Wearing makeup is a choice for me.  I wear makeup because I want to, not because I feel as though have to.  I always wear makeup for myself, not for anyone else.  I don't wear makeup to impress a man and I don't wear makeup because society tells me to.  I feel comfortable wearing makeup, but I feel equally as comfortable going bare-faced.  Plus, I don't wear all kinds of makeup.  For example, I have never worn foundation and I don't wear eye-shadow.

Wearing makeup makes me feel good.  Even when I am not going to a special event, I like to make myself look pretty - though I do feel pretty without makeup as well - and wearing makeup gives me a bit of a confidence boost.

Wearing makeup is another element of self-care.  Taking care of myself physically and mentally is some important, and wearing makeup is (kind of) a part of that.  Like I said before, makeup makes me feel good and feeling good is an important part of having high self-esteem.  Also, I take care of my skin and applying makeup is like the icing on the cake, or the cherry on top.

Finally, wearing makeup is a bit of fun for me.  I love adding colour and definition to my face, and 'enhancing' my features a little bit - i.e. adding a bold colour to my lips.  Plus, I love experimenting and trying out different products.

It's kind of cool.
